Published, Scripted Adventures Vs. Not

For the first time in a while, I’m running a scripted adventure, one scripted by someone else. And while I appreciate the time it’s saved me, I don’t think I’ll be doing another scripted adventure any time soon. Here’s why:

It’s so much harder to motivate characters story-wise through their own motivations and nuances. For instance, I’ve got a character whose whole goal in life is to rescue his brother. But because my scripted adventure wasn’t designed with him in mind, it isn’t about rescuing his brother. I managed to put in a bit about how an NPC is paying him in information that will help him rescue his brother, the majority of the play session is not focused on this story element.

In my next story arc, I will be building the adventure around the goals and desires of the characters involved, far more organically too. In fact, I plan to get a little assistance in building the world from my players as well. And actually, I think that’ll be an entirely different post coming up: Selecting genre and setting with your players.
