Advocating Mutliple Rule Sets for Miniature Wargames

It just so happens that I have built up an extensive collection of Warhammer 40K miniatures over the past four years (to include Witch Hunters, Orks and, of course, Space Marines). I love the game, and perhaps I love the modeling aspect of the hobby even more.

Here's my challenge to Games Workshop and other miniature wargame makers: Develop multiple rule sets for the same sets of miniatures. No matter how much you love a particular game, eventually, you'll grow bored with it. But with miniature wargaming, unlike with other games, you've invested a considerable amount of time and energy into your game bits. Why not make that investment mean more by giving gamers more options with their miniatures (and sell more rule books in the process)?

There are a few different ways a manufacturer could take this. For one, you could have different scales of battle represented, allowing you to create totally different rule sets to capture the feel of the different scales (e.g., skirmish level, battalion level, army level, etc.). In large scale rule sets, a vehicle or model would represent entire units. You could develop rules that focused more on an adventure style game experience, almost like an RPG.

Another fun way to take this would be to allow third-party developers to create "fan rule sets" that just started from scratch. The manufacturer would still make money from licensing the game (and much more for selling the miniatures to support the various rule sets).

As I write this blog post, I'm getting really geeked up. Man, I wish someone would make this happen.
