I’m in between role-playing games at the moment and have been pondering which game to run next. I’ve been struggling to find a system and setting that supports a number of desires on my part. My last two games have been too complex (GURPS) and too simple (a homemade brew created by another gamemaster). While I enjoyed both, for this time around, I’m looking for something in between those two. I’d like something that allows the story to move fairly quickly (like Spirit of the Century), but that also has a certain level of depth in the rules, as far as options. I would like a system that supports long-term campaign play (unlike Spirit of the Century). And I would like a setting that really grabs me.
Here is a list of some of the games I considered for this next campaign:
Dogs in the Vineyard – I almost chose this one. I’m not sure how much long-term viability this one has though, and it didn’t sound like it a lot of depth of options. Also, as I understand it, this one demands a lot of extra creativity from its players.
Starblazer Adventures – This is a sci-fi system based on the Fate rules from Spirit of the Century (which appeals to me). This one has potential and I can see myself doing this one in the future.
Full Light, Full Steam – I was attracted to this one, purely from the setting: steampunk in space.
Diaspora – This is also Fate rules in a sci-fi setting. But this system purports to support “hard science fiction” – a fact which entices and repel0073 me at once. I may purchase this game just for the amazing world creator it purports to have.
Shadowrun Anniversary Edition – I’ve run 2nd and 4th editions of this game in the past. Supposedly, the anniversary edition has cleaned some of the weaknesses of the 4th edition. I may come back to this one. I love the setting.
RunePunk (with the Savage Worlds system) – This is the game I chose to go with. I think it’s primarily because of the setting: steampunk and magic in a sprawling, grimy city. But the system also seems to have many merits, with interesting background development for characters and a return to the use of all the various dice shapes (which has a particular attraction for me for some reason; I think it’s called “fun”).
